At the Office of the Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner, we’re committed to finding new and meaningful ways to reach out and engage with the veteran community here in Northern Ireland. This past Remembrance Weekend, we had the honour of hosting a memorable event that brought veterans together to commemorate their service and sacrifice.
On Saturday, 9th November, 100 veterans gathered at Windsor Park, Belfast, for a special occasion organised in partnership with Linfield Football Club. This event was a unique opportunity to recognise and celebrate the veterans who have dedicated their lives to service, as well as to foster a strong sense of community and appreciation.

The day began with a pre-match meal, setting a warm and welcoming tone for everyone present. During the meal, attendees enjoyed an insightful Q&A session with David Jeffrey MBE, a familiar face in Northern Ireland football and a respected leader in the community. David has managed both Linfield and Ballymena United, the two teams competing that day, and his deep connection with the sport added a meaningful dimension to the event. With a legacy of almost 370 appearances as a player and a staggering 31 trophies won during his 17 years as Linfield manager, David Jeffrey’s dedication resonates with the commitment and sacrifice made by our veterans.
One of the most moving parts of the day took place just before kick-off. The veterans were invited onto the pitch to participate in the Act of Remembrance. This solemn tribute provided a moment of reflection, honouring the service and sacrifices made by veterans across Northern Ireland. The veterans received a standing ovation from spectators, a powerful display of respect and gratitude from the wider community.
Adding to the day’s atmosphere, the Moneyslane Flute Band accompanied the proceedings, delivering stirring military music that further highlighted the significance of the occasion. Known for their discipline and precision, the band’s performance contributed to an unforgettable experience, filled with reflection, pride, and appreciation.
This event at Windsor Park was more than a football match; it was a tribute to the strength, resilience, and commitment of the veterans in Northern Ireland. We are grateful to Linfield Football Club, David Jeffrey, and everyone involved who helped create this humbling celebration. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to engaging with our veterans and ensuring their invaluable contributions are recognised and remembered.
